EIRCOM is to sell Aldborough House, a once great Georgian mansion at Portland Row, in the north inner city area of Dublin. Duncan Lyster of agents Hamilton Osborne King is quoting a guideline price in excess of £1 million for the house which is to be sold by tender on December 9th. In architectural terms, it is one of the most important Georgian buildings of its kind in this part of Dublin. Currently used mainly as offices, it has a floor area of 26,888 sq ft and is in need of complete refurbishment. The zoning for the area would allow it to be used for a range of purposes, including, hotel, offices and apartments. The house is located just off the "Five Lamps" junction of Portland Row and Amiens Street. The building stands on 1.16 acres which are laid out as parking spaces and rented to IFSC workers at £2,000 each per annum. The house backs on to St Joseph's Mansions, a Dublin Corporation flats complex which is shortly to be handed over to a housing association for refurbishment. Though the house was built by the Second Earl of Aldborough in 1796, he never lived there. The building is listed for preservation and has a beautiful sweeping central staircase.
