THE ARCHITECTURE, philosophy, film and furniture design of Charles and Ray Eames, the American design couple (Ray was a woman), will be portrayed on the big screen in February when their grandson, filmmaker Eames Demetrios, comes to Dublin to discuss their work.

He came here a few years ago to do a similar thing and also discussed how he protects the design of the family furniture and tries to stop it being copied.

Iconic pieces include the Eames lounge chair and ottoman, LCW chair and moulded plywood coffee table.

Charles and Ray Eames’ most famous film is called Powers of Ten, which begins with a picnicking couple and draws out, by powers of 10 (although there are a few miscalculations), all the way to outer space, and then goes the other way, into the man’s hand and down to an atom – quite something in 1977, when it was made.

The screening and talk by Eames Demetrios is running as part of a week-long conference organised by Gradcam (Graduate School of Creative Arts and Media) at NCAD.

The conference, called Arts research: publics and purposes, runs from February 15th to 19th and takes place in Dublin City Council’s new Wood Quay Venue. See gradcam.ie for more information.
