The hand-made leaded glass panels in the front door of Helvetia, 106 Trees Road Upper, Mount Merrion, Co Dublin, were put there shortly after the house was built in the l950s. The house behind the door has had the best of the rest of its 1950s features preserved along with its modern additions. The result is a bright, open house with three reception rooms (one a sunroom), three bedrooms and a deck to the rear.
It is for sale by private treaty through Alva Gunne Estate Agents, which is guiding a price in the region of £370,000 €469,803). The vendors are Helvetia's second owners. They bought the house five years ago from the original owner, who had bought it from the plans.
The present owners have put work and loving time into Helvetia, stripping and polishing the timber floors throughout as well as stripping and waxing the original doors and fitting them with porcelain knobs. The staircase and architraves too have been restored to their original wood. The predominant colour is a creamy yellow which, along with the honey-coloured wood, makes for a mellow mood. A sunroom added to the rear of the main reception rooms, and patio doors in the kitchen, allow for maximum light.
The livingroom, to the right of the hallway, leads through a wide arch to the diningroom. Both have had their 1950s fireplaces replaced with Victorian cast-iron open fireplaces with slate hearths. The south-facing sunroom has a large Velux window, pine ceiling and floor, recessed lighting and Rationel glass doors to the timber sundeck. This has built-in seating and steps to the 90 ft long garden, which is bounded by high trees and hedging.
A glass-panelled door leads from the sun room to the long kitchen-cum-breakfastroom. This has a parquet floor and a good range of blue-painted units. One of these, a custom-built free-standing floor-to-ceiling cupboard, has clever door shelving and sliding storage trays. Steps from the kitchen lead into the garage/utility room which runs the length of the house and would easily convert into a room.
Upstairs is a family bathroom with white-painted timber panelled walls and tiled floor. There are Jacuzzi jets in the bath, as well as a shower, and the wash-hand basin has Victorian style gold-plated taps. The main bedroom is to the front and has two large, built-in wooden wardrobes and a fireplace. The second bedroom is to the rear and has a similar built-in wardrobe. The third, smaller bedroom, is to the front.
A Barna shed has been converted into a playhouse. The front garden is walled and has a lawn, roses and shrubs.
