The castellated Gothic revival style of Duckett’s Grove has dominated the Carlow landscape for more than 300 years. Round and square turrets encircle a central octagonal beauty embellished with oriels and statue-filled niches. Since September 2005, Carlow County Council has been restoring the two inter-connecting walled gardens. The first phase has now been completed, the old paths revealed and the beds and borders reinstated. Restored paths and the repaired sunken stone bridge, plus plantings of oak, lime, hazel, spindle and laurel rekindle the spirit of the “Georgian Pleasure Grounds” in time for the the Duckett’s Grove Country Fair on tomorrow. Activities will include a plant sales area, a walk and talk with Finola Reid, woodland falconry and artisan foods and craft markets. Children will be entertained with a Teddy Bear picnic and a traditional Punch and Judy show.
