The first babies of 2025: Bradley, Rowan and Naoíse

Maternity hospitals – and at least one home – were busy overnight with deliveries of new babies

Staff at Dublin’s National Maternity Hospital welcomed the first baby born in Ireland this year at 19 seconds after midnight on January 1st.

Baby Bradley was born to parents Eve Colley and Eric Tyrell. He is the couple’s first child.

Maternity staff were also busy at Dublin’s Rotunda hospital, where Martha Gilroy Kelly welcomed a baby boy at nine minutes past midnight. A spokesman said the baby, Theodore, weighed 4.08kg. Eight further babies were born between midnight and 8am at the Rotunda, the spokesman said.

The birth of baby, Theodore, brings the total number of babies born at the Rotunda Hospital to more than 900,000 since it first opened its doors some 275 years ago.

At Cork University Hospital, a baby boy, Rowan, weighing 3.51kg, was born to Shannon Gibson from Cork city. Rowan was born at 20 minutes past midnight.

At Cavan General Hospital, baby Naoíse Beggan was born weighing in at 3.54kg. Mother Shannon Kelly delivered baby Naoíse at 12:53am.

“I’m so happy she’s here. I’m relieved,” Ms Kelly told RTÉ radio. “I’m just so happy, I haven’t slept yet myself. I’m delighted that she’s here safe and sound.”

At Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda the first baby, a boy, was born at 1.32am.

At the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar a baby girl was born at 2.24am to parents Shaunagh Carberry and Sean Healy from Longford.

At Sligo University Hospital, parents Ornagh Burke and Ronan Cox welcomed a baby girl at 3.54am.

At Kerry University Hospital, no babies were born in the hospital itself but midwives assisted the home birth of a baby girl, Féile, at 5.41am. Féile, weighing 4.77kg, was born to Andrea Thornton amd Eoin Murphy at Ardfert, Co Kerry. The midwives were Sinead Murphy and Kirsty Hawthorn.

At Mayo University Hospital, baby Fíodhna was born at 6.33am weighing 4.5kg. Parents Naiomh Higgins and Chris Byrne are from Claremorris.

At Letterkenny University Hospital baby girl Norah was born to Sharon and Lee O’Hara at 8.30am. Norah weighed in at 3.9kg.
