Two refreshing French wines from Dunnes

Wines for the Weekend: A Silver Moki Sauvignon Blanc and Baron de Baussac Carignan for less than €10

Two wines from Dunnes Stores this week. Originally the wine for Silver Moki Sauvignon came from New Zealand. More recently it is sourced from various cooler parts of France. This gives the wine an appealing freshness.

The red wine comes from the Languedoc in the south of France. Carignan (cariñena in Spanish) has a reputation for producing wines with swinging tannins and high acidity. But wines made from old vines, as in this case (vieilles vignes means “old vines” in French) can be very drinkable.

Silver Moki Cool Climate Sauvignon Blanc 2022, Vin de France

11.5%, €9

Light in alcohol, with gooseberry aromas, a zesty acidity and racy green apple fruits. This is a well-priced wine to enjoy by itself or with summery salads.

Baron de Baussac Carignan Vieilles Vignes 2022, Pays d’Herault

13%, €9.50

Plenty of sweet rounded dark fruits with vanilla and spice kicking in on the finish. A great party wine or for sipping in front of the TV.
