Old Grey Whistle Test 40th AnniversaryWMTV ***

There used to be two main rival TV music shows. Top of the Popsfocused on pop chart songs while OGWTwas strictly an album artist show. This 40th-anniversary, three-CD collection has its moments but really could have been better. The first two CDs feature tracks from bands who appeared on the show (Led Zep, The Who, Bowie, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, etc), which is all well and good, but these recordings are widely available elsewhere. The third CD captures music performed on the show itself, and there's some great stuff from Tom Waits, Robert Wyatt, The Ramones and Magazine. It makes you wonder why they just didn't have original live recordings from the show over all the three discs. After all, who wants a Now That's What I Call The Old Grey Whistle Testalbum?
