Do or Die Whirlwind***
Irish guitarist Mark McKnight's second CD has the unfazed, play-anything perfection that reminds one of New York jazz, a connection reinforced by the presence of tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake and one or two slightly unforgiving tempos. The music is more relaxed than that might suggest – McKnight's laidback assurance rests on a formidable technique, a fluent flow of ideas and an instinctive appreciation of contrast as a soloist. A boppish, mainly "inside" player, he thrives in this well-honed quartet completed by organist Ross Stanley and the superb drumming of James Maddren. Apart from the surprising inclusion of one standard ( Bewitched), the programme consists of originals by the leader. They're essentially blowing vehicles, without much character beyond that; the interest – and distinction – of the album rests with its classy soloists. See whirlwindrecordings.com
