Irish-based internet firm Weedle has received $4 million in funding to expand its social media platform in the US and other regions, it said today.

The company, which allows people to connect with others with specific skills, is backed by Irish entrepreneurs Dr Michael Smurfit and Iain MacDonald, who co-founded the company. It is also receiving support from Enterprise Ireland.

The funding was announced during an Enterprise Ireland-supported trade mission to the US, led by Taoiseach Brian Cowen.
