Web Log: Google adds VR experience to YouTube

Google Cardboard and YouTube have combined to form what can only be called the Oculus Thrift. Armed with your smartphone and the cheap as chips Google Cardboard, you can enjoy an immersive virtual reality experience on YouTube.

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai announced last week that YouTube now supports VR video in addition to the existing 360-degree experience. These videos can be watched via Cardboard, which splits the phone screen in two to provide depth of vision; the 360 aspect kicks in when you move your head. Google has curated a list of all VR compatible YouTube videos , including ones themed on Minecraft and The Hunger Games. It's a short list for now, but YouTube has also added the ability to watch existing videos through Cardboard, essentially converting them to 3D rather than being VR.
