Merger creates banking giant

Spain's Banco Bilbao Vizcaya and Argentaria announced a long-awaited merger last night, creating the second-biggest bank in the euro zone with a £€38 billion market capitalisation.

The marriage of Spain's second and third-biggest banks produces a new financial services giant to be called BBVA, which is expected to play a key role in the further consolidation of the European sector.
