THE electrical appliances manufacturer Glen Dimplex, which employs around 1,200 people in Northern Ireland, is planning further expansion, according to its chairman, Mr Martin Naughton.

He said that investment in the region was part of the company's long term strategy. This could mean more jobs for the Glen Dimplex plants in Newry, Portadown, and Bangor.

But he warned that doubts remained over economic prospects because of the continuing political instability. "Business needs stability to prosper," he said.

Mr Naughton was in Belfast recently for the endowment of a new Chair of Business Strategy at Queen's University. It will be based in the recently formed School of Management and the first student intake will be next October.

Queen's advertised, last week for a person to fill the Martin Naughton chair in Business Strategy, who will develop teaching and research in this area and be responsible for the introduction of an MBA programme.

Glen Dimplex, which has a turnover of around £300 million, is 75 per cent owned by Mr Naughton. The remaining 25 per cent is owned by Mr Lochlann Quinn.
