A spokeswoman for the Minister for Finance said yesterday that Government spending increases of 9.5 per cent for the year to the end of August can be explained by late receipt of European Social Fund monies.

The Fine Gael spokesman on Finance, Mr Michael Noonan, had called on the Minister to explain the large increase which emerged in Exchequer figures published on Wednesday.
