Compaq Computer has cut prices as much as 18 per cent on its US business personal computers, with five DeskPro models now costing less than $1,000 without a monitor.

The top PC maker said the price reductions were possible because of lowered costs of components, which the company is able to pass on to consumers more quickly because it is moving to a build-to-order strategy in filling orders.
