ONE or two delegates who attended the Oireachtas Select Committee on Finance and General Affairs on Wednesday to argue the merits of their pre Budget submissions were surprised at the detail of the questioning they were subjected to by some politicians.

The knowledge and grasp some TDs had of matters financial appeared quite impressive. On further investigation, however, it turned out the TDs had been given a list of questions to ask by the consultants who are reading the pre Budget submissions on behalf of the Minister for Finance, Mr Quinn. Almost 90 have been received so far and the committee, under Jim Mitchell's chairmanship, has the onerous task of considering them all and preparing a report for Minister Quinn.
