Ian Wiley had a good win in yesterday's Irish Open canoeing championships, sponsored by Cara Computers, at the sluice weir in Lucan.

The Olympic canoeist, preparing for the World Cup event in Slovakia next month, beat John Caffrey and Aidan Rheinisch into second and third place in the KI class.

Yesterday's was the third of three selection races for the World Cup and the top three will now be travelling.

Tadgh McIntyre won the Canadian canoe (C1) class, but did not make the selection criteria set by the Irish Canoe Union for the World Cup and the union will now meet to decide whether he will be sent.

Yesterday's championships double as a leg of the three-event Pan-Celtic Cup, and Ireland finished second to England in this category.
