Paddy Whelan proved the hero as Hermitage won their first Metropolitan Cup when beating Sutton in a play-off after the sides finished level at nine matches each after the second leg at Hermitage on Sunday. Trailing by 7-2 after the first leg in Sutton, Whelan lost in the top match by one hole to David O'Neill but Hermitage secured the seven matches to take the final into a three-hole play-off.
Whelan and O'Neill had been nominated in the event of a tie and after halving the first tie hole, Whelan made an excellent par on the second to go one up and a half at the ninth gave Hermitage their first success in the competition. Their only other appearance in the final was in 1983 when they lost, ironically, to Sutton.
