THE FUTURE of Tommy Walsh in the AFL is the subject of intense media speculation in Australia, as reports surface that at least three clubs has expressed an interest in recruiting him during the off-season.

Walsh is out of contract at St Kilda and though the Seaford outfit are anxious to retain his services, their failure to give him a debut despite consistently good form in defence and attack with VFL affiliate Sandringham could mitigate against them.

The Tralee native, who is waiting to hear if he will be part of the Irish International Rules squad, is expected to play a bigger role with the club though, with a new era beginning there following the departure of head coach Ross Lyon to Fremantle.

Walsh’s agent Michael Quinlan has not made any comment, but local media are linking the 23-year-old with Melbourne, Sydney and Richmond.

While Walsh began his Aussie Rules education along the half-back line, he was used more as a key forward by Sandringham towards the end of last season, booting six goals, including the winner against Collingwood’s reserves.

Melbourne have made finding a key forward a priority during trade negotiations and having had an offer for Collingwood’s Chris Dawes rejected, are reported to have held discussions with Quinlan and St Kilda. Sydney and Richmond are also believed to have made enquiries.

Meanwhile, Essendon have rejected reports that they are pursuing Setanta Ó hAilpín. The Corkman has declared an interest in leaving Carlton to get more game time and the Blues are willing to facilitate him.
