RISING star Oscar Urbina was yesterday handed the biggest ride of his career to date in Saturday's Pertemps St Leger at Doncaster. The Spaniard has been booked by Luca Cumani to partner Mons, 7 to 2 joint-favourite for the season's final Classic with Ladbrokes whose spokesman called the race "wide open".
Urbina (24) gets his chance after a successful season which has seen him ride 24 winners, including 21 for Cumani. "Oscar Urbina will ride Mons," the trainer said. "He has done well this season and he knows the horse having ridden him a lot at home in work.
"I think he will give the horse a good ride."
Urbina rode his first winner in his native country at the age of 15 and was twice crowned champion apprentice there but he has taken longer to enjoy success in Britain. He had ridden only three winners from just 33 rides here prior to this season.
Mons leapt to the forefront of betting on the season's final Classic last month when half a length second to Dushyantor in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.
