Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, eager to leave a Maryland prison early and resume training, may not have to face a disciplinary panel for a violent outburst in jail last Friday, prison authorities said yesterday.
The 32-year-old fighter had been expected to appear at a closed-door hearing in the Montgomery County Detention Center after prison officials cited him Friday evening for hurling a television against a set of bars while guards stood on the other side. A final decision on whether to pursue disciplinary action has yet to be made by the jail's warden.
Olympics: The president of the Chilean Olympic Committee, Sergio Santander, handed in a letter of resignation yesterday after he was accused of corruption in Salt Lake City's successful bid to host the 2002 Winter Games. CRICKET: Noel Mahony, who was capped nine times for Ireland between 1947 and 1953 and who was also president of the Irish Cricket Union in 1979, will take over as president of Leprechauns Cricket Club at its annual general meeting at the Grand Hotel in Malahide this evening, writes Karl Johnston. He succeeds Charles Lysaght, who has been president for the past two years. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Leprechauns' first fixtures. The club's first match, which was organised by Mahony, was played against King's Hospital School on May 11th 1949. Other fixtures established by him at the time were against St Columba's College and the Ireland Schools.
