Manchester United and AS Roma have both been fined by European soccer's governing body Uefa following crowd disturbances in their Champions League quarter-final earlier this month.

Uefa's control and disciplinary body fined Roma €45,000 (approx) and United €21,000 over the incidents in which fans of both sides were found to have lit fireworks and thrown missiles.
   
Roma won the quarter-final first leg 2-1 but were then humbled 7-1 in a return that also featured minor pre-match scuffles outside Old Trafford.
   
The Uefa statement, issued today, also mentioned "general crowd disturbances" but did not specifically refer to clashes between Italian police and United fans.
   
United accused the police in Rome of handing out "indiscriminate beatings" to fans caught up in the trouble.
   
Police and government officials in Rome rejected the claims, insisting police had been forced to intervene after United fans trampled past stewards.
