Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon voluntarily presented himself for questioning by magistrates today amid allegations of betting improprieties.

Magistrates in Turin said they questioned Buffon for more than two hours over the allegations and took a statement from the player - the world's most expensive goalkeeper.

Juventus are one of four top Italian teams whose officials are under investigations for "criminal association" and "sporting fraud" in what has developed over the last few days into one of the biggest scandals to hit the game.

Investigations by public prosecutors do not necessarily lead to criminal charges and those investigations are not necessarily linked to the questions faced by Buffon.

As well as the questioning in Turin, Parma magistrates are investigating three residents of Parma on suspicion of gambling related offences. Judicial sources said four Juventus players were involved in the case.

Italian soccer regulations forbid players from any form of betting on football matches in any championship. Italian media have speculated that the Parma probe might be related to Buffon, who joined Juventus from Parma in 2001.

The keeper will not be playing in tomorrow's league title decider against Reggina due to an injury.
