Sanchez to stick with system

Group F N Ireland v Spain: Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez insists he is not going to change his tactical approach

Group F N Ireland v Spain: Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez insists he is not going to change his tactical approach. The province were jeered off when they went down 3-0 at home to Iceland in their opening Euro 2008 qualifier after fragile defending last weekend.

Next up are one of the world power-houses Spain at Windsor Park tonight. Sanchez was in bullish mood ahead of the match.

He said: "I could go to plan Z which I had only just thought about. But then we will end up in situation where we will not win any games. We have to be consistent in our approach. The worst thing tomorrow is for us to go out and change things. I can try and shut up shop and go for a draw if that is what people want. But I know what the Northern Ireland fans are after is for their team to give everything they have got. It might be naive but I go into every game trying to win."

Sanchez has stressed he will stay loyal to his players but that might not stop him tinkering with his side. Michael Duff, Grant McCann and Kyle Lafferty could come into contention to face Spain. Sanchez said: "The players have done well for me and Northern Ireland in two and half years. It has been a rollercoaster ride . . . It will continue. It will be strange if we bounce back against Spain but strange things happen in football."

Sanchez knows he is under pressure to deliver especially after the victory against England last season which raised expectations in Belfast and beyond. They have made good progress under his stewardship and now lie 72 in the Fifa world rankings. Not that Sanchez is relaxed. He said: "Every game as international manager is career-defining. That is the pressure I work under and it is a lonely job. But that's what I do for a living."

Meanwhile, skipper Aaron Hughes looks set to retain his place despite having six stitches inserted in a cut above his eye. He has indicated to Sanchez he is keen to face Spain.
