South Africa - In 1997, five international players, who all were using the same gym, tested for steroids. The five included the Springbok lock Johan Ackerman. Eight players have tested positive in all, including Ackerman, Balie Swart, Ewanderie Van der Berg and Johan le Roux.

Wales - In 1991, Richie Griffiths, a Wales B centre, tested positive for hormone drugs and was banned for two years. In 1996, Paul Jones, a Llanelli lock, admitted injecting testosterone and was banned for two years.
