`Pop' in cracking form

A hole-in-one helped John `Pop' Walsh to victory in the Winter League at Carrick-On-Suir on Sunday. Walsh holed out his tee shot at the 160-metre sixth hole on his way to 25 points and a one-point win over Rafael Ponce DeLeon with Frank Murphy in third place on 23 points. Ponce DeLeon was also second in Saturday's nine-hole singles, finishing one behind David Power, who won with 25 points.

The mild weather over the weekend also brought out the best in the father and son partnership of Frank Shortt, senior and Frank Shortt junior at the Curragh. The Shortts returned 10 up over 13 holes but still only won on the last three from Andy Nolan and Paddy Walsh.

Noel McConnell was a double winner at Skerries. He won the ninehole singles with 26 points from Danny Gahan and Cormac Green and also took first place in the fourball with Kevin O'Brien.

The Smillie family were the form pair at The Island. Gwen Smillie won class three in the women's competition on Thursday and her husband, George Smillie, took second place in the Saturday singles behind Tony Ross.
