MUNSTER CUP SH ROUND-UP:GER "SPARROW" O'Loughlin got his managerial career with Clare off to a good start at Meelick when his side had a hard-earned 0-15 to 1-9 win against Waterford IT.

And it was the decision by O’Loughlin to send in Mark Flaherty as a substitute that proved crucial as Flaherty scored the last three points from frees.

Waterford IT, behind by a point, 0-7 to 0-6, at the interval, drew level eight minutes from the end when Ray McLoughney cracked a shot to the Clare net after good build-up by Timmy Hammersley and Kieran Grehan.

Waterford IT had a number of outstanding individual players, including Hammersley, who scored four of their points, two from frees.

UCC held an experimental Cork scoreless in the second-half at Páirc Uí Rinn yesterday as they registered a 1-12 to 1-7 victory.

Despite trailing by 1-7 to 0-4 at half-time, the students tacked on 1-8 without reply to set up a quarter-final meeting with Limerick on Sunday.

Cork looked far sharper in the first half and were good value for their interval lead, the goal coming from Paudie O’Sullivan on nine minutes, when he reacted quickest to William Egan’s free.

The introduction of Clare under-21 star Darach Honan helped College in the second-half and his 50th minute goal, following a scramble in the Cork square, proved significant.

Davy Fitzgerald’s Waterford also qualified for the quarter-finals when they easily accounted for CIT by 1-26 to 1-12 in Kilmacthomas yesterday. In the opening exchanges, there was very little to choose between the sides but Waterford swept CIT aside in the second half. Maurice Shanahan finished with a total of nine points, five of them from play.

University of Limerick enjoyed a comfortable 3-15 to 1-15 win over Kerry in Tralee.
