RACING NEWS: INJURED jockey Matt O'Connor remains in a "stable" condition at Cork University Hospital and there are hopes that his sedation can be reduced soon.

O’Connor (21) is in a medically induced coma at the hospital’s neuro-surgical unit after taking a heavy fall last Thursday at Thurles races.

“The observation and on-going tests are satisfactory which is good news,” said the former Turf Club medical officer, Dr Walter Halley, who is a related to O’Connor’s family.

“They would hope within the next 48 hours to reduce his sedation but that will depend on test results.

“He is in a medically induced coma which is normal procedure and the situation is being continually monitored. He is still seriously ill,” he added.

O’Connor’s fall came from the Colm Murphy-trained Walkin Aisy at the fifth last fence in Thursday’s Templemore Beginners Chase.

The conditional rider has ridden 31 winners this season, including the Grade One Dial-A-Bet Chase on Big Zeb at Leopardstown’s Christmas festival.
