Roberto Mancini has been appointed new coach to Italian first division side Fiorentina, the club's vice-president Mario Sconcerti announced yesterday evening.

Mancini was named just hours after his Turkish predecessor Fatih Terim had resigned after a weekend when the Florence club had made no effort to conceal that they were targeting Mancini.

Fiorentina's new coach had assisted Sven Goran Eriksson at Lazio earlier this season, but had most recently played on loan in England with Leicester City.

Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa yesterday added the name of Lazio striker Claudio Lopez to his squad for tomorrow's friendly match with Italy at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.
