Gonzaga College - 10 CBC Monkstown - 9 A try in the 47th minute from Irish Schools full back Ross McCarron was the decisive moment in a tension-filled Leinster Schools' Section B Senior Cup first-round match at Lakelands Park yesterday.
McCarron supplied the finishing touches to a powerful run from his big outhalf Simon Morrissey. The outhalf bounced off at least four Monkstown players in a 50-metre run that was cut short 15 metres from the try-line only for McCarron to appear on his shoulder to take the ball home.Morrissey's conversion made it 10-6.
It was the first time Gonzaga had been in front. They had first use of a strong wind but that did not seem to suit their game and Monkstown led at half-time 6-3. Two Mark Tuthill penalties in the ninth and 20th minutes, sandwiched a Morrissey reply in the 14th minute.
It looked as though Monkstown had done most of the hard work but McCarron's try gave them the impetus. CBS's Tuthill struck a 55th-minute penalty to leave the minimum between the sides but they couldn't get their hands on the ball with any great regularity.
