CHALLENGE TOUR:Colm Moriarty took a significant step towards winning his 2008 European Tour card with a third place finish at the Challenge Tour's Rolex Trophy in Switzerland yesterday.

The Athlone 28-year-old, who won his first Challenge Tour event in Wales four weeks ago, won €10,200 after a final round of two under par 70 gave him a 14 under par 274 total.

That left him trailing the winner Robert Dinwiddie, by four strokes, but enabled the Irishman to climb a further eight places on the rankings, from 31st to 23rd spot. Moriarty needs to finish in the top 20 to secure full playing rights for The European Tour next season.

US TOUR:Brandt Snedecker stormed to victory in the Wyndham Championship at Greensboro last evening. He shot ten birdies in a closing round of 63 to win by two shots from Tim Petrovic, Jeff Overton and Billy Mayfair.

SENIORS AMATEUR: Ireland won the European Seniors' Team championship at Bled in Slovenia on Saturday.

The team of Val Smyth, Nigel Duke, Tony Goode, Seamus McParland, Maurice Kelly and Hugh Smyth beat Scotland 3-2 in the final.

Victories in the singles by Goode and Kelly left the match tied at 2-2. It was then up to Hugh Smyth who was one down with two to play. Smyth staged a great fightback and levelled the match at the 18th before going on to clinch the title for Ireland at the third extra hole.

GIRLS AMATEUR: Twelve-year-old Lisa Maguire has been rewarded for her amazing achievement in reaching the semi-finals of the Girls British Open at Southerndown in South Wales last week.

The Slieve Russell star was named at the weekend in the first-ever Britain and Ireland girls team.

A squad of eight has been chosen and it will play against six members of the recent Vagliano Trophy team plus two of the reserves for that side at North Berwick between October 12 and 14.

SENIOR TOUR: Jimmy Heggarty saw his challenge for The Senior English Open at St Mellion undone by a disastrous start of five bogeys in the opening six holes of his final round of 77 (+5) over the windswept, testing Nicklaus Course, where Scotland's Bill Longmuir claimed victory by two shots from England's Carl Mason after he shot 69 to his rival's 72 (Ev) for a winning 54 hole total of 208.
