MONAGHAN are being spoken of in the same light as Maya for throwing away an All Ireland final winning opportunity. The doughty Ulster side return unabashed to Croke Park tomorrow more determined to prove that this is finally going to be their year to raise the Women's All Ireland senior football championship Cup.
Laois snatched a second chance from the rapidly closing jaws of defeat last time out. They will not mind that the last gasp goal that forced the draw was very much of the freakish variety.
That score left Monaghan, who like their opponents have never won the competition despite final appearances, quite devastated. That piece of escapology by the Laois team was largely contrived by midfielder Lulu Carroll.
Her speculative lob found its way under the Monaghan bar to the bewilderment of Ann Gavan.
Since then, however, the Monaghan women have responded well in training and have succeeded in regrouping without any difficulty. Their intent to complete the job has never been greater.
They have made two changes in attack for tomorrow's eagerly awaited replay. Noreen Quigley is replaced by Lorraine Connolly while Linda Gartlan, a substitute in the drawn match is retained to the exclusion of Pauline Woods.
Angela Larkin, their top score with 1-3, the last day, is again on the right wing of attack.
Laois make one change in personnel by placing Mary Kirwan instead of Martina Phelan in the half forward line. Sue Ramsbottom remains the biggest threat to the Monaghan rear guard.
Much will depend on the midfield duel and Monaghan appear to have strengthened their cover by moving Jenny Greenan to the pivotal centre back spot.
A lot will also depend on the accuracy of Laois sharp shooter Linda Brennan.
