Meehan to step up in Tuam final

Galway and Roscommon have opted for little change in their selections for Sunday's Connacht football final in Tuam.

Favourites Galway, who deposed the champions of the last two years, Mayo, and also heavily defeated Leitrim, make one enforced change.

Declan Meehan replaces Paul Clancy at wing forward. Clancy injured his leg in the semi-final against Leitrim and although the damage to his calf and knee was not initially serious, he aggravated the problem playing for his club, Moycullen, in the county championship.

He missed a fair bit of training and consequently was not considered for selection. Meehan was a regular first-choice in the NFL and has come into the team as a substitute in both of Galway's championship matches.

The substitutes' bench will be announced later in the week.

"Preparations have been okay," said Galway manager John O'Mahony. "We played three challenges, lost to Laois and Kerry and beat Kildare, but I would have swapped them for two competitive championship matches like Roscommon have had."

O'Mahony said Roscommon's defeat of Sligo would help Galway concentrate on the match. "Traditionally, Roscommon have been great championship warriors and they now look like they've left their League form behind them.

"It's been a while since they won in Markievicz Park and they showed great belief in their first championship match - which is always a dodgy one - coming from so far behind.

"And with respect to Sligo, Roscommon had 14 wides compared to five for Sligo, so they were well on top."

The long gap between the provincial semi-final and final has created difficulties for O'Mahony and his preparations. "It has been difficult coping with the five-week gap - the structure of the championship gets more and more crazy as the years go on.

"If you'd no injuries it would be ideal to play every fortnight. Instead there's these big gaps and the players go back to their clubs after two weeks but then they're back to the county, so it's not ideal for them either."

Roscommon have named an unchanged team but manager Gay Sheerin has made one significant addition to the panel. Derek Duggan, the county's only All Star nominee currently playing, returns to the bench.

"Derek has recovered from injury," said Sheerin, "and will be available to come on at some stage. He wasn't sharp enough for the Sligo match but he's come on a good bit and worked very hard." Alan Nolan, Ciaran Connelly and Sean Staunton are still indisposed because of injury.

In advance of the Ulster final at Clones, Derry's main problem seems to be who to leave out of the side for Sunday's clash with Donegal. Johnny McGurk is absent despite having returned to the panel for the semi-final against Armagh.

"Johnny damaged his knee," said selector Frank Kearney. "Although he was back in action, he didn't give it enough time to recover and pushed himself too hard in training. But he's the only concern."

On the positive side, Joe Cas sidy returns from suspension and will be available to take his usual place in the left corner of the attack. The problem arises in that Cassidy's replacement for the Armagh match, Enda Muldoon, played very well, particularly when moved to centrefield in the second half.

The player under pressure might be - surprisingly - the accomplished Dermot Heaney, who had a disappointing afternoon two weeks ago, ending up at full forward. In his defence was the fact that he was recovering from the flu.

Kearney said Heaney is now "flying in training and very much in contention for a place". Wing forward Gary Magill has fully recovered from the concussion that brought about his substitution the last day.

A recent addition to the panel is dual player Geoffrey McGonigle, whose extravagant technical gifts haven't always been complemented by devotion to training. The club form which recommended him to selector Anthony McGurk is described by Kearney as "spectacular" and includes a 29 haul in a recent club match.
