FAIS Schoolboys' Semi-final -
St Patrick's, Cavan 1 Summerhill Coll, Sligo 0:ST PATRICK'S College, Cavan, booked their place in the FAIS Umbro Senior Boys final for the third time in the last nine years as they overcame Summerhill College of Sligo in a tight semi-final at Finn Park, Ballybofey, yesterday.
What turned out to be the winning goal came after just seven minutes when David Talbot did the spadework to earn a corner from which Darragh McHerrity forced the ball home in a crowded goalmouth.
On an energy-sapping surface, Summerhill’s main threat came from Michael Casey who was involved in a number of promising moves.
With chances at a premium in the second half, Summerhill tried desperately to get back into the game and with 20 minutes to go Stephen Cawley’s effort was disallowed for offside.
St Patrick’s almost got a second late midway through the half but Cathal Bogue was denied by some alert goalkeeping from Vinnie Cadden.
Casey and substitute Scott Maguire had late chances for the Sligo side but St Patrick’s held on for victory despite having Talbot sent off for a second yellow card five minutes from time.
In the final, on March 22nd, the Cavan side will meet the winners of tomorrow’s second semi-final between De La Salle, Waterford and St Benildus College, Stillorgan.
