Glenanne, the unpretentious west Dubliners, are left to challenge illustrious Lisnagarvey for the All Ireland laurels at Belfield today (3.30 ). Lisnagarvey, though, need only a point to prevail as they followed up Saturday's 4-2 defeat of Pembroke Wanderers with a 3-2 win over Cork C of I yesterday. While Glenanne also beat Pembroke 3-2, their 2-2 draw with C of I in the opening game leaves them requiring a victory this afternoon. Both C of I and Pembroke made bold efforts to keep their hopes alive yesterday, losing out only in the closing exchanges. Indeed, the Munstermen were two up against Lisnagarvey. David Hobbs lashed his side into the lead following a thrust by Karl Burns and then an inspired attack from the back by Derek Hales sent Simon Kershaw clear to make it 2-0 after the interval.
But following two short corners , Robbie Taylor and Mark Tumilty put Lisnagarvey on level terms before Jonathan Bloomfield found an opening for Kevin Lunn to score the winner with only three minutes to spare. Glenanne seemed in control of the All-Leinster clash as they zipped into a 2-0 interval lead with a brace of goals by John Goulding. However, Pembroke struck back early in the second half through the diving Devin Donnelly and Justin Sherriff (drag flick) and, with Stephen Stewart leading Wanderers' resistance, the match was in the balance until Stephen Butler created space from a set-piece for Devin Kehoe to put away the decisive goal seven minutes from the end. So, Glenanne are one game away from qualifying for Europe for the first time. Lisnagarvey will be favourites to earn another title for Ulster but with Julian Stevenson suspended and Colin Clarke joining Daniel Clarke on the injury list, they are sure to be fully stretched.
