Kite backs Ballesteros

America's Ryder Cup captain Tom Kite has backed the European team's decision to dump injured Miguel Angel Martin

America's Ryder Cup captain Tom Kite has backed the European team's decision to dump injured Miguel Angel Martin. Kite said he sympathises with Martin, who has not played since July because of an injured wrist, but understands the European team's desire to finalise its line-up.

"Even those people who sympathise with Miguel, and there are a lot of them on both sides of the ocean, know the reality is that they (the Europeans) are trying to field the best team they can," said Kite during the Bell Canadian Open.

"You can't wait until the day before the Ryder Cup to finalise the team. I think you need a couple of weeks to get everything done."

Martin was dropped from the European team on Tuesday and it appears the only way he can regain his spot for the showdown at Valderrama in three weeks is through the courts.
