Kerr forced to consider options

Republic Of Ireland manager Brian Kerr will probably have to cope without Celtic forward David Murphy for this evening's key under-16 European Championship qualifier against Switzerland at Richmond Park.

Murphy had to be helped off during Monday's 2-0 defeat of Sweden and was brought to hospital to have a leg wound treated, but he still hopes to play some part in the UEFA mini-qualifying tournament.

It's doubtful whether Kerr will take a chance on him for this evening's game against the Swiss who, after defeating Wales 3-0 on Monday, appear to be the Republic's main rival for the one available spot in next summer's finals in Israel.

"They are a big side and they are quick going forward," said Kerr of tonight's opponents, "but I was very pleased with the way we played against Sweden." Stephen Brennan of Newcastle United, who came on for Murphy on Monday and set up the second Irish goal, looks to be the most likely replacement if Kerr is forced to replace his wide man. However, if the Ireland coach opts to bring in some fresh legs it may be only one of a number of alterations to the team. As with the first round of games, admission to Richmond Park this evening is free for children and just £2 for adults. The same applies to this afternoon's game between Sweden and Wales which kicks off at 2.30 p.m. at Belfield Park.

Representatives of the AUL, the Amateur League and Dublin Corporation give their views while there will be a report on the experimental switch which has been in operation for some time now in Mayo.
