Roy Keane last night added the Professional Footballers' Association player of the year prize to the football writers' award he won earlier this week.
The Manchester United and Republic of Ireland captain headed Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips and Harry Kewell of Leeds, who were also second and third respectively in Friday's footballer of the year poll.
Kewell was also presented with the award for young player of the year, finishing ahead of Coventry's Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard of Liverpool. Two of Leeds United's Irish contingent, Ian Harte and Gary Kelly, were named in the PFA Premiership team of the year, while Mark Kennedy of Manchester City and Mark Kinsella of Charlton were part of the Division One team of the year.
Roy Keane said: "This award is special because it comes from my fellow players and I'm very surprised."
He went on: "All the players who were nominated had a big chance of winning this, so I'm fortunate it was me and I would like to thank all the professionals who voted for me and even the ones who didn't.
"I always said I could make it as a top professional, especially at a club like Manchester United."
He said he was fortunate to have worked under two great managers. "I owe a lot to Brian Clough, for bringing me over from Ireland when I was so young and putting me straight into the first team.
"And Sir Alex Ferguson has been the main person who has helped my career, both on and off the pitch."
