Ireland turned in a competent performance to dismiss Papua New Guinea for 146 in Toronto yesterday but again did nothing to suggest they will be doing anything more than making up the numbers in next week's second stage of the ICC Trophy.
Derek Heasley ensured Ireland's continued presence in the World Cup qualifying tournament with 5-25 to dismiss PNG for 146. Then Decker Curry, restored to the top of the order and scoring 95 not out, guided his side home with 17.3 overs to spare. The threat of a flight home tomorrow if they failed to win helped focus the Irish from the start and a wicket in the first over, followed by a fine opening spell of 2-12 from Adrian McCoubrey, kept the Pacific Islanders on the back foot.
Papua briefly flickered while opener Aru Uda was making 43, but their innings drifted as Heasley bowled straight at a brisk medium pace and let the opposition get themselves sorted out. Alas, it is not a tactic the better batsmen are likely to fall for next week. Ryan Eagleson's form and fitness also remain a worry as he is not firing at anywhere near his best.
To qualify for the play-off final a week on Tuesday, Ireland need to win three of their four second stage matches against Holland, Scotland, Canada and either the UAE or Uganda who play-off today.
