LINGFIELD'S two Classic trials take centre stage today and Heron Island can swoop to instigate a Peter Chapple Hyam double by landing the Group 3 Tripleprint Derby Trial before Meribel takes the Champagne Ruinart Oaks Trial half a hour later.

Heron Island began his career with a promising Doncaster success but was unable to fulfil hopes of an undefeated juvenile year when he could manage only fourth place in a Newmarket listed event.

Put away for the winter, the Shirley Heights colt returned to compete in the Feilden Stakes at Headquarters. A lot of use was made of him that day and after leading until meeting the rising ground he faded into sixth behind Storm Trooper.

A change of tactics in a three runner event at Salisbury last week saw a workmanlike three quarter length success over Story Line. Currently on offer at 25 to 1 for the Vodafone Derby, Heron Island will strengthen his trainer's hand for the Epsom Classic with a victory today.

Meribel makes her seasonal bow, and only her second race course visit, when contesting the Oaks Trial. It was on the soft over seven furlongs at Haydock in September that she began her career, with a three and a quarter length third behind Classic Romance.

After running green early she began to get the hang of the game when keeping on towards the finish and will be much more suited by the extra four and a half furlongs today.

At Beverley the front running Bollin Frank can go one better than last time and land the Rothmans Royals North South Challenge Series Handicap.

Tim Easterby's charge attempted to make all in a Pontefract Handicap last time but was caught in the final furlong by Shaffishayes. A gutsy sort, Bollin Frank should be suited by the Beverley hill and open his account for the season.

Despite having to carry topweight, Glide Path can land Bath's closing event, the Radstock Handicap, for John Hills.
