AIRTRICITY LEAGUE, PREMIER DIVISION: Galway United 1 Drogheda United 2:IT HAS been a demoralising season for Galway United and despite a much improved display, Jumbo Brennan's charges still ended Saturday's clash empty handed following a late Drogheda United rally.

Ahead courtesy of a splendid 66th minute Alan Murphy chip, Galway were gaining in confidence as they furiously attempted to eke out a first home win of a truly miserable campaign.

Drogheda, though, took maximum advantage of Galwegian defensive hesitancy on 73 when substitute Daniel Corcoran nodded a Tiernan Mulvenna cross over the line.

The visitors had Alan McNally red-carded for a 75th-minute foul on Mikey Gilmore, but Mick Cooke’s side still nicked a winner.

Ten minutes remained when Dave Rogers floated a cross into the Galway area and Seán Kelly headed the ball into his own net as the locals suffered another cruel loss.

Considering McNally’s dismissal Drogheda boss Cooke was thrilled by the manner in which his team recovered. “It was very pleasing to get three points, last week’s results meant we were safe in the Premier Division, but it was nice to get another win to give us a bit of confidence going into the last three games.

“In particular I was delighted that we got the job done with 10 men.”
