Michael Doody played the perfect captain's part when he led Portmarnock GC to their first success in 46 years in the Leinster Alliance Irish Times Shield at Woodbrook yesterday, writes Shay Keenan.
Doody, the 2001 captain of the Leinster Alliance, led from the front with a 72 nett late in the day to edge out early clubhouse leaders Slade Valley by one shot.
Portmarnock's total of two over par 218 was made up by Doody's 72, Brian O'Brien Kenny on 73 and John Kenny also on 73, while John Magner, with a 76, was the non-counting score.
Doody was a model of consistency with halves of 40, including birdies at the eighth and 16th.
The best scores of the day were 71s from Stackstown's Liam Ryan and Brian Fetherstone from Beech Park. Ryan won the individual award with a better back nine.
