TRAINER Mark Tompkins emerged from the wilderness yesterday as Cool Edge stormed to victory in the £20,000 added William Hill Spring Handicap at Doncaster.
Without a winner for four months, Tompkins finally tasted victory again as Cool Edge, who narrowly missed the cut for the Lincoln, showed his appreciation for the soft ground.
Racing on the far side, Cool Edge quickened to the front approaching the final furlong as the runners on the stands' side folded in the closing stages. At the line, Cool Edge was one and a quarter lengths ahead of Lynton Lad with Danees With Hooves third.
Tompkins, who plans to saddle Even Top for the 2,000 Guineas, was delighted that he had at last turned the corner after a miserable spell.
Trainer Reg Akehurst's belief that the ground would be unsuitable for Shadirwan proved way off the mark as the entire romped home in the Cystic Fibrosis Research Cup.
Under a supremely confident ride from Richard Quinn, Shadirwan pounced on the front running Noyan a furlong out and stretched away to score by five lengths. "That just shows what I know - I didn't think he'd go in the ground!" said Akehurst.
Quinn had teed up a double when Hit Or Miss struck the target in the Cystic Fibrosis Maiden Selling Stakes. Trainer Gay Kelleway notched a 83 to 1 double with the victories of Sorbie Tower and Anzio.
The latter gained a comfortable success in the Holroyd Construction Group Handicap on his first run for the yard. "I claimed him out of Brian Pearce's stable after he beat one of mine quite well on the all weather," said Miss Kelleway.
