GOLF: No resting on his laurels for Simon Thornton, who shot up 16 places in the final round for a tied-33rd place finish.

After shooting a 68 that left him on 283, five under par, the adopted Co Down man pinpointed the need to be consistent over all four rounds in his quest to savour a maiden tour win.

As Thornton put it: “I’ve learned that when I get the chance , I’ve got to take it, as opposed to moving back on the Saturdays.

“I’ve got to look for top-15s, top-10s and to have a go . I want to keep playing the way I am and to take my chances when they come.

“Instead of 71 or 72, it has been 75, 76 and that just kills me.”
