Darren Clarke's mood at the end of his second round in the NEC World Series of Golf yesterday matched the weather and the colour of his jacket: dark and sombre. The Irishman's answer when asked for a quick comment after his round was a simple "no". He had had a torrid time over the south course of the Firestone Country Club, making four bogies and two double bogies for a six over par 76 in wet and windy conditions.

His 148 total for the two rounds left him trailing the field in joint last place and 14 shots behind the leader, Dudley Hart.

Nick Faldo compiled a workmanlike level par 70 that moved the Englishman through the field after an opening 73.

While another possible wild card pick, Jesper Parnevik also shot a level par 70.
