Jimmy Fitzgerald, who sent out three winners yesterday including a Newbury double, can enjoy some more success with China King at Kelso today. The six-year-old showed fair form in bumpers and opened his account over timber with an easy win at Perth in June. China King was not seen out again until he contested his first handicap over today's course and distance just 18 days ago.
He acquitted himself well, leading after three out and rallying gamely when headed on the run-in to go down fighting by a head to Well Appointed.
China King looks open to further improvement and is napped to land the Prudential Assurance Handicap Hurdle.
The day's feature event the Macbet Champion Chase has attracted only five runners but nevertheless looks a trappy affair with each contestant in with a chance. However, easy Cheltenham winner Hillwalk makes the long journey to Scotland from Lambourn and the hint should be taken.
