Cashman the new rebel leader

Tom Cashman has been appointed to succeed Jimmy Barry-Murphy as Cork senior hurling manager

Tom Cashman has been appointed to succeed Jimmy Barry-Murphy as Cork senior hurling manager. He will take charge of the team for Sunday's South-East League match against Clare.

Cashman, Barry-Murphy's assistant for the past eight years - three with the county minors and five with the seniors - will have virtually the same selection committee to work with after last night's rubber-stamping of the executive recommendation by the county board.

The only change sees Phil Noonan of Newtownshandrum, the county champions, come in as a replacement for the outgoing manager. In a way it spares the county having to drop a selector as Cashman was the representative of last year's champions Blackrock, allowing Bertie Og Murphy - who guided the county to two under-21 All-Ireland's - to join the selection committee as an additional voice.

As the number of selectors is restricted to five, someone would have had to go to make way for Noonan - probably Murphy despite credentials which make him a likely successor to Cashman whenever that comes to pass.

In full the selection committee is: Tom Cashman (coach), Fred Sheedy, Johnny Crowley, Bertie Og Murphy and Phil Noonan. Ted Owens stays on as trainer.

Meanwhile, the longest-serving county secretary in the GAA, Liam Creavin in Meath, is to step down after 45 years. The Navan O'Mahony's clubman has also been treasurer over that period. The announcement was made in his absence - due to ill health - at a board meeting earlier this week. As a result the county convention has been put back to January 7th in order to allow clubs to send in new nominations.

Corner back Michael Foley will miss out on Patrickswell's meeting with Sixmilebridge in the semi-final of the Munster club hurling championship at the Gaelic Grounds next Sunday. It has emerged that he broke a hand in Sunday's replay against Toomevara, the second time this season that he suffered such an injury. He had just resumed training last week after recovering from the first break.
