Adamant Approach set for Galway Plate

The veteran Adamant Approach is a strong possibility for the Galway Plate, according to his handler Willie Mullins.

The 13-year-old has been in the form of his life recently and won a chase at Killarney on his last start.

He also holds an entry in the Galway Hurdle, for which he has been allotted joint-top weight along with Essex, but Mullins is favouring a crack at the Festival showpiece.

"He's entered in the Hurdle and the Plate and he'll be entered in the GPT Galway Hurdle on Monday night," said Co Carlow trainer.

"He won there last year at the October meeting so it is obviously a track he likes, but I don't have any firm plans.

"He's top-rated in the Hurdle but he has 10st 12lb in the Plate so that would be a possibility as it's a nice weight. I doubt he'll run in the Hurdle.

"The fact that he is so versatile is obviously a bonus and gives us plenty of options.

"But having said that, the Galway Plate is a very big prize and will probably get more consideration." Mullins could also saddle Bothar Na in the Galway Plate.

The former hunter chaser, who won the Kerry National last season and finished fifth in the race 12 months ago, pleased Mullins in a piece of work yesterday.

"Bothar Na worked well so he might go for the Plate," reflected his trainer.

"He ran a good race in it last year and wasn't beaten very far, he just found a bit of bother over the last few fences."

Adamant Approach is 16 to 1 for the Galway Plate with the sponsors, while Bother Na is a 14 to 1 shot.

Meanwhile, Michael Bell's Lockinge Stakes winner Red Evie will bid for back-to-back victories in the Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on September 8th.

The four-year-old filly never looked better than when winning the Newbury Group One but she has turned in two below-par efforts in her two subsequent outings.

However, Bell believes that may be down to the ground and is keen to get her back on a surface with plenty of give.

"She is very fresh, very well but we've decided to swerve the Prix d'Astarte at Deauville this week and wait for the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown," he said.

"We will try to get her as fresh as we can for that. She likes it there, she won it last year and we are trying to get her all-singing-and-dancing for that.

"I think the problem in her last two races has been the ground, it was pretty quick for both races - she likes cut like a lot of Intikhab's," Bell said.

"She was very impressive in the Lockinge when she beat the colts, so we are very keen to get her back on ground with some cut."

And the dual 1,000 Guineas winner Finsceal Beo is set to miss her intended engagement in Sunday's Prix d'Astarte at Deauville due to the likelihood of soft ground.

Jim Bolger's charge, who finished eighth on her last outing in the Coronation Stakes, is now likely to wait for the Matron Stakes.

"She's not going to France, because we're not sure of getting good ground and we're not going to risk running her on soft," Bolger told www.racingpost.co.uk.

"We will wait until the weather settles before making plans for her, but she is in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown and that is one race we will consider."
