Madam, - I am amazed that our Irish political establishment could embrace the despotic leader of the corrupt and discredited regime in Uganda.
Continued foreign overseas aid by the Irish government to Uganda's government has been a disgraceful episode in our history. It is clear to anyone with an eye to see that the Irish Government must no longer tolerate the pogroms and genocide in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It must shout from the treetops about the horrific killing of an average of 1.25 million people a year in the Congo, and have the courage to cut off aid right now.
Where money is involved, African tyrannies get the message very quickly! The proof of this is in the action taken by President Museveni in sending two of his ministers in advance of his arrival here to try to smooth the way. It just didn't work. His own appearance on the Pat Kenny radio show on Monday was far from convincing.
Uganda is one of the world's 10 most corrupt states, yet our Government rewards it by increasing aid by 42 per cent. This is crazy stuff and in our name it must be stopped. - Yours, etc.,
