A Chara, - The refusal of two pupils to learn Irish at school may well reflect simply just the rebellious nature of young people, but it is also rather a rather sad reflection on how we undervalue our national language.
Here in Brazil, I meet people who are so captivated by Ireland, its music, drama and literature, that they have taught themselves Irish. They constantly listen to Irish on the radio and are always trying out new words and phrases which send me running to the dictionary.
It is their love of Irish and things Irish which have rekindled in us exiles the things we took for granted when living at home. - Is mise,
