Turning up to Lansdowne Road

Sir, – John Leahy's reminder of the story of John Pullin and England coming to play rugby at Landsdowne Road in 1973 when Scotland and Wales stayed away for security reasons (Letters, March 18th) is always worth hearing again, but he left out the best bit, and I don't mean the result (Ireland won 18-9).

At the dinner Pullin demonstrated his wit was as sharp as his principles when he said: “We may not be much good, but at least we turn up.”

– Yours, etc,

DAVID HARRIS,
